Two 19-year-old Brooklyn men are in custody after an early afternoon shooting on Hamilton Hill that was witnessed by 2 Albany Police detectives.

Detectives Joe Iwaniec and John Fitzgerald were working on an investigation that brought them to Schenectady. At about 1:15 p.m., they were in their unmarked police car on Craig Street when they observed 2 black males in front of the Boys and Girls Club each pull out a handgun and saw one of the men fire a shot at a group of people. After the incident, the people ran and the shooters walked south on Craig. Detectives Iwaniec and Fitzgerald attempted to stop the two, but they ran through the Club parking lot and a foot pursuit ensued. The detectives and responding Schenectady police officers captured the men hiding between two houses on Delamont Avenue near Sprague. The loaded 9mm semi-automatic weapons they were carrying were recovered.

Montinay Smith and Sircarl Jordan have each been charged with the felonies of Attempted Assault-1st degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon-2nd degree. Smith was also charged with Defacement of a Weapon because the serial number on the weapon he was carrying had been removed. The investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible.

There is no indication that anyone was struck by the shot. Nobody in the group has come forward or been located. It is unknown what led to the shooting.

Mug shots of the men are not available tonight.
