SUBJECT:UPDATE – STRONG STREET FIRE
Fire investigators from the Schenectady Police and Fire Departments – with assistance from the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control – are investigating the fire that occurred at about 4:15 this afternoon at 826 Strong Street in which firefighters found 2 children dead inside the residence.
The children have been identified as 3-year-old Paul Thomas and his 23-month-old sister, Shadaya [Note: At this time we are unable to confirm the correct spelling of Shadaya’s name]. The cause of the fire and the children’s deaths are unknown. Autopsies will be performed sometime on Tuesday.
The Carmen, Niskayuna and Scotia Fire Departments assisted at the scene. The Niskayuna, Stanford Heights and South Schenectady Fire Departments responded to other calls-for-service in the city during the incident.
Two Schenectady firefighters were injured while fighting the fire. Firefighter Chris Carroll sustained a cut hand, and Captain David Orr complained of chest pains. Both firefighters were transported to Ellis Hospital for treatment. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
