The Zone 5 Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy will sponsor an “Adopt-A-Cop” fundraiser this Sunday, October 16th, to benefit the Slidell, Louisiana Police Department.

The event will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the Polish American Citizens Club at 110 Commerce Avenue in Albany. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 per person (children are free). Admission includes hot dogs and hamburgers, salads, snacks, ice cream and beverages. Music will be provided by 2096, a band whose members include 3 Schenectady police officers. There will also be raffles and door prizes.

Slidell is a city of 30,000 people located about 30 miles northeast of New Orleans and took a direct hit from Hurricane Katrina. Nearly all of its Police Department’s 82 officers and 30 civilians lost their personal possessions, and the Department’s headquarters and most of its equipment were destroyed. Since the storm, officers have been working without uniforms and basic equipment, but continue to serve their community as best as they can despite their professional and personal challenges.
