SUBJECT:MOTHER ARRESTED FOR LEAVING 3 YOUNG CHILDREN HOME ALONE

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested for leaving her 3 young children home by themselves earlier today while she went to the store.

At about 10:30 this morning, Nickia Dickerson left her sleeping 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twin sons inside their 2nd floor apartment at 1096 Forest Road and walked to a store 1 mile away. At about Noon, a passerby called police to report a child hanging out of a window and calling for help. Responding officers observed the girl yelling for help from a partially open window. When no one answered the locked door, the officers forcibly entered the residence and located the girl inside a locked bathroom. No other children were found in the apartment at that time. At about 1:15, Dickerson returned home and told officers that she had also left her twins in the apartment. Officers conducted a search and located the boys inside the attic. Cockroaches were found inside the filthy and unsanitary apartment. The children appeared to be uninjured.

Dickerson has been charged with 3 counts of the misdemeanor of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She was arraigned in Police Court late this afternoon and was released on her own recognizance.

The children were turned over to Schenectady County Child Protective Services who were attempting to place them with a relative.
