A 44-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning and charged with illegal gun possession and being a fugitive from North Carolina.

Michael E. Whitfield was apprehended at his 535 Mumford Street residence by members of the Department’s Office of Field Intelligence, N.Y.S. Parole and the U.S. Marshals.

Whitfield’s arrest was the result of a tip that indicated he was wanted in North Carolina on drug possession charges and was involved in criminal activity in Schenectady. Whitfield currently has an arrest warrant from New Bern, North Carolina for possession with intent to sell a controlled substance.

At the time of his arrest, Whitfield possessed 2 loaded revolvers. The investigation also led to the recovery of a stolen rifle and an assault rifle at 1450 State Street. Whitfield has not been charged in connection with those weapons.

Whitfield is charged with the felonies of Criminal Possession of a Weapon-3rd degree and Fugitive from Justice. He was arraigned in Police Court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail.

This is the second investigation this week in which illegal handguns were seized, resulting in the recovery of 7 firearms.
