SUBJECT:NEW CLASS OF DRUG RECOGNITION EXPERTS GRADUATING TODAY

Chief Michael Geraci – President of the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Training Academy executive board – is pleased to announce that 13 area police officers have recently become Drug Recognition Experts (DRE’s) and will be honored at a graduation ceremony at the Zone 5 Academy on Erie Boulevard in Schenectady at 1 p.m. today.

The officers – 6 from Schenectady County agencies – recently completed 102 hours of intensive training in the detection and apprehension of drug-impaired drivers. DRE’s are trained to conduct standardized and systematic 12-step evaluations of suspected drug-impaired drivers that involve physical, mental and medical tests.

This training class was sponsored by Schenectady County STOP-DWI and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

There are now 120 DRE’s in the state and 60 more currently in training.

Chief Geraci stated, “Drug Recognition Experts are crucial to law enforcement’s mission in removing impaired drivers from our roadways in a continuing effort to keep the public safe.”
