Members of the Department’s Traffic Division are investigating an auto/pedestrian accident that occurred this morning at about 10:35 in front of 319 Hulett Street.

A Honda SUV driven by Dwayne Johnson, 44, a Schenectady police officer off-duty at the time, was northbound on Hulett when Sophia Stewart, 6, of Hulett St., reportedly ran across Hulett and into the Honda’s path. Although Officer Johnson attempted to avoid striking the girl, he couldn’t and she was struck by the front of the vehicle. She was treated at the scene by Schenectady Fire Department paramedics and transported to Albany Medical Center. Sophia sustained a head injury, but was alert and talking to medical personnel.

Immediately prior to the accident, Officer Johnson had been parked on the side of the street about 50 feet south of the accident location and had just pulled away from the curb. Initial indications from witnesses are that speed was not a factor. Also, alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

The investigation is continuing and should be completed early in the week.
