SUBJECT: ARREST MADE IN DOMESTIC MURDER @ 1162 BARRETT ST

At about 12:45 this morning, the Department’s Communications Center received a 911 call for “unknown trouble” and a possible injured female at 1162 Barrett Street. Police units and Schenectady Fire Department paramedics were dispatched to that address.

The first officers arriving observed a man leaving the residence who was bleeding from his hand. The man – resident James Ross, 42 – was detained. Officers entering the residence were met by a boy who led them to a bedroom where a bleeding unconscious woman was lying on the floor. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and treated the woman – resident Faye Cohn, 29. Cohn was then transported to Ellis Hospital where she died a short time later. Cohn had been stabbed with a kitchen knife multiple times in the back and neck.

Ross was subsequently charged with Murder-2nd degree. He was arraigned this morning in Police Court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail. Cohn and Ross had previously dated, but had broken up. Cohn was allowing Ross to live at the residence.

Cohn’s 5 children (ages 9, 7, 5, 3, and 19 months) were inside the residence at the time of her murder, but it is unknown if any of them witnessed the incident. None of the children were harmed.
