DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 20th, 2004 / 05:20 PM

Beginning this Monday, May 24th and continuing through Sunday, June 6th, the Schenectady Police Department will participate in the “Buckle-Up New York” seatbelt campaign that is sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

We will partner with the New York State Police and the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department in conducting several seatbelt checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout the 2-week initiative. We will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to safety restraint violations during the campaign and will be issuing tickets to violators. In 2003, we issued more than 1,000 tickets for safety restraint violations.

The compliance rate in New York in 2003 was 85%. This year, the goal of “Buckle-Up New York” is to increase the compliance rate to 86%.

News coverage plays a vital role in this traffic safety initiative, so we are requesting that you promote our educational and enforcement efforts. We greatly appreciate your assistance. You are invited to join us at a checkpoint during this campaign.
