SUBJECT:RESULTS OF UNDERAGE ALCOHOL SALES INITIATIVE

Throughout last night, members of the Department’s Traffic Services Division – in a joint initiative with the New York State Police – conducted a check of 45 city convenience stores for underage alcohol sales.

The following clerks were arrested for selling alcoholic beverages to an under-21 police operative. Each was charged with “Selling an alcoholic beverage to a person under the age of 21” (Alcohol Beverage Control Law) and “Unlawfully dealing with a child” (Penal Law):

* Aliya Butt, 36, Quick Stop Convenience Store, 1459 State Street

* Sherd al-Theiban, 35, American Deli Grocery, 1006 Crane Street

* Wilfred Deuyour, 39, Cumberland Farms, 1268 State Street

* Ahmad Alhajj, 29, Eastern Avenue Deli and Grocery, 838 Eastern Avenue

In addition to the criminal charges against the clerks, the stores face administrative sanctions by the State Liquor Authority.

This initiative was part of an ongoing effort to verify that stores selling alcoholic beverages in the city are complying with the law. More initiatives are planned in the future.
